University of Washington IMA Field

The University of Washington and their developer, Wright Runstad & Co., selected D.A. Hogan & Associates as consulting Landscape Architects and Engineers for the Planning, Design, and Construction Administration of the conversion of a portion of their inventory of existing soil-based grass fields to a secure, lighted, infilled synthetic turf facility.

The University had previously identified an area of former landfill adjacent to a segment of the University Slough drainage canal as their preferred site. Project team members including Hart Crowser, Inc. (geotechnical engineering), Parametrix (wetland biologists), Magnuson Klemencic Associates (civil engineering), and D.A. Hogan collaborated closely on solutions that enabled mitigation of both poor subsurface soils and landfill methane abatement, as well as wetland buffer limitations and associated ground water issues, all while meeting both the University Recreational Activities program as well as the General Contractors schedule for delivery.

The project provides increased capacity for many of the University’s Club and Sanctioned Intramural sports including Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Soccer, Flag Football, Ultimate (Frisbee), and Softball in a multiple-field configuration. Two softball fields arranged in opposing corners of the site are bounded by distinctive purple warning tracks to enhance safety as well as create a distinctive appearance.
